Preventing the militarization of emerging technologies

Emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence, drones, cyber tools, autonomous weapons, and hypersonic systems are increasingly shaping both civilian life and modern warfare. While these innovations provide significant benefits in areas like healthcare, communication, and disaster response, their growing militarization raises concerns about international security, escalation, and misuse by both state and non-state actors. Driven by geopolitical tensions and the demand for advanced military capabilities, investment in defence technology has rapidly increased, and collaboration between governments and private technology companies has become more common. However, the dual-use nature of these technologies and the lack of specific international regulations create major challenges for global governance. Existing legal frameworks have struggled to keep pace with technological innovation, highlighting the need for stronger international cooperation, clearer regulations, and greater accountability to ensure these technologies contribute to security rather than instability.
